The Chronicles Of America's Vanishing Smalltown Saloons

OK gang, here is the deal.  The graphic designer has the new site up and running but I am slogging through the learning curve of using Dreamweaver.

I thought it would take a month but its taking far longer. So, for now I will continue posting to this site and update the new one once I figure things out.

Thanks for your patience!

June/July 2008

  • I was in Florida this week - a vacation that included reading material on Dreamweaver.  It was comforting to see Yuengling Lager on tap at almost every bar I stopped at   (even though I have mostly given up on Lager as it causes me pounding headaches of late)

  • Some time ago I received the suggestion that I investigate the Corvette Bar in Annville.  Stopped in and the review is posted.

March 2008

  • Happy March everyone.  This year is flying by.  If all goes as planned the website will soon transition to its new (professionally done) look.  I almost pity April for having to work with me.  I still have very little knowledge of what the heck I am doing as far as the design of this.  Who knew that BLUE HOTLINKS were no longer in style!??!

  • Hary's (Hamilton St, Allentown) is definitely closed.   The newspaper said the city wanted to shutter it as a nuisance bar.  Went by and its dark and silent.  Moved the listing to the RIP page.

  • 080301: Reviews and pics of Allentown's Commix Hotel and JP OMalley's

  • I finally made my return to New Holland's Ritz on Main then drove up the road to The Pub then back across town to Shooter's Crossing

  • Started off the St Patrick's weekend with Irishy stops at three Lancaster taverns: Annie Baileys, Brendee's and The Shamrock.

  • New guest reviewer "I.M. BIBER" submitted a very nice write-up about the "Downtown Reading Hofbrau". Thanks!

  • "Cheesteak Supreme" - an appropriate name for my monster sandwich (with two cold Landshark Lagers) at Pottsville's Maroon's.

  • More St Patrick's Day news with comments on Barbon's (including a few photos of some  attractive celebrants) and Trooper Thorn's.

  • Has anything changed at Ephrata's Rawhide since my last review in 2004?  Read about it for yourself!

  • I found a 2nd McLaren's Irish Pub in Delaware - and the bartender making a big boo boo.  Removed Bald Stewey's as it has now become Rox Bar & Grill.  Also changed

February 2008

  • Starting the new month with exterior photos of the West York Inn and JR's Tavern

  • My project has gotten too big for its britches and I am now seeking professional advice on how to better organize the content and decrease the load times. Project is out, bids are being received and there is a frontrunner.  I don't make a dime from this website (with hosting and domain charges it costs me money) so this is a big step.

  • Hefty's [Denver, Lancaster County, PA] has closed and the business and license are for sale.  RIP.

  • Dreary afternoon stops at Cafe Waldorf, Pike Cafe and Jack's Pub.

  • I had a few dozen bidders when I posted my project online.  I have awarded the deal (several hundred $$) to a talented web designer from down south. This is a big step considering this project COSTS me money and MAKES me none.  The result will be worth it though as her preliminary workup is fantastic.  More info to be posted to my blog.

  • Made snowy afternoon stops at Hall's Cafe (where I was AGAIN accused of being an undercover cop) and the 915 Cafe.

Reading Beer Is Back!! - We've Missed You, Old Gus!

The people of Reading will decide if Reading Beer lives or dies. Personally, I'm giving my money to the hometown team and not the huge (and often foreign-owned) national brewers.   Tap me a Reading or Yuengling anyway.

A Guy who thinks a lot like me.

Unfortunately, I won't read the site because I don't want his reviews to affect what I may write in the future.

Frederick Lauer was a incredible man who loved beer.

Hundreds of people traveled by train from New York City to unveil a statue in Penn's Common in his honor. Today almost nobody has heard of him. Even www.findagrave.com refused to list him as a "famous" burial.

Don't let his memory fade away.

Lew Bryson writes great books and blogs about  breweries.  His TV special is a hoot.  He takes beer very, very seriously and has forgotten more about beer than I ever have a desire to learn. His best quote is:

"Knowing when to fold is the key; you only get so much liver in this life, and there’s no good reason to waste it on sub-par booze"

Read Lew's sagely comments and buy a book or two

One Cold Hand  has nothing to do with bars or beer but it is such an odd project.... started by a female in Pittsburgh who pondered why she so often saw a single glove laying along a road or in some public place.  The site posts photos of these lonely gloves and tries to reunite them with their lost owners.  It is also the basis of an artsy project that she is doing.  Oddly, as soon as I saw this site I started seeing solo gloves... about 5 or 6 in the past month or so.  The photo to the left is one that I found in a park across from Geno's Steaks in Philly.
